Norwegian frigate completes first ESSM Block 2 live firing

BLUF Norway's KNM Otto Sverdrup completed the Fridtjof Nansen class's first ESSM Block 2 live firing during an Andøya campaign that also used simulations and target drones to test new Aegis software, missile communications and active guidance. Preliminary results are on track, while U.S. data analysis, installation, fleet integration and operational certification remain unfinished.

NATO ships train against drones in contested electromagnetic conditions

BLUF NATO's five-day Dynamic Guard 2026 exercise put Greek, Italian and Turkish ships against drones, missiles and aircraft in a contested electromagnetic environment. Official footage shows an FPV drone jammed into the sea and Hellenic Navy anti-air guns firing, but NATO released no engagement score, measured performance or fielding decision from the training.

NATO awards seven counter-UAS capability-development contracts

BLUF NATO DIANA says seven innovators from six Allied nations received capability-development contracts through the first NATO Headquarters use of its Rapid Adoption Service. Their counter-UAS technologies will enter DRONE SHIELD 2026 experimentation in Czechia across detection, tracking, directed energy, sensor fusion and C2 integration. Selection funds development and validation, not procurement, fielding or demonstrated performance.

Finland presents its first two locally based F-35s

BLUF Finland formally presented the first two F-35s permanently based at Rovaniemi on October 1, after their September 18 arrival. Lockheed Martin says Finland has received ten aircraft overall, with eight temporarily supporting training in Arkansas. The ceremony marks physical delivery to Finland, not an operational-ready declaration for the 64-aircraft fleet or completion of the remaining deliveries.

Shield AI assigns X-BAT flight-test and production sites

BLUF Shield AI named Newton, Kansas, for X-BAT development flight test, acceptance and sustainment, and Des Moines, Washington, for production; leases and buildout are underway. Flight testing is planned later in 2026, production in 2029 and full rate in the early 2030s. Those schedules and the 9,800-job projection are company plans, not achieved output or a government selection.

Navy documents Blackbeard captive-carry flight on Super Hornet

BLUF An official Navy report now documents a September 18 developmental captive-carry flight with two Blackbeard test articles on an F/A-18E/F, advancing the program toward early operational capability after the previously covered production order. No weapon was released or live-fired; both articles returned safely, and future developmental and live-fire milestones remain ahead.

NATO links counter-UAS, resilient networks and targeting experiments

BLUF NATO Allied Command Transformation says its 2026 DiBaX, LCI-X and Next Generation Targeting experiments are joining resilient 5G and passive detection, multinational counter-UAS sensors, C2, electronic warfare and effectors, and faster data-supported targeting decisions. The trials are designed to generate evidence: ACT explicitly warns that a successful experiment does not mean a capability is ready to buy or field.
