HQMC has now supplied the original record behind the Ronald Haynes casualty-card lead. FOIA file 2026-USMCFOIA-004602, released in full on July 8, 2026, confirms that the Hastings-area Marine was formally recorded as Ronald Marvin Haynes, PFC, USMCR, service number 555802.
What the card confirms
The identity fields match the family-history subject through his December 15, 1925 birth date, Grand Rapids birthplace, Hastings legal residence, and parents in Hastings. The card ties him to the 26th Marines, 5th Marine Division, and places the event at Iwo in the Volcano Islands.
The front gives a casualty date of February 27, 1945. A continuation entry says a later casualty report recorded combat fatigue on February 26. The card also records transfer to a base or shore hospital in the Marianas area and an apparent return to duty on March 31, 1945, with a favorable prognosis.
What remains open
The typed organization line reads “CoB, 3rdBn, 26thMars, 5thMarDiv, FMF.” Company B / 3rd Battalion is an unusual pairing for the regiment, so the exact company and battalion still need muster-roll or personnel-file reconciliation.
The visible nature-of-wound field is blank. The released card does not establish a Purple Heart, so the separate public profile that lists the award should remain an unverified lead until an official award record is found.
