Tomatoes, basil and the start of a pizza

An opened can of San Marzano tomatoes held above a metal bowl of tomatoes and fresh basil leaves.
San Marzano tomatoes and basil in the bowl, photographed July 25.

This pizza photo begins at the sauce bowl. An opened can of San Marzano tomatoes is held above the tomatoes and fresh basil, before they have been mixed together. It is a view of the ingredients at the start of the process, with no finished pizza in the frame.

Tomatoes and basil are also at the heart of my primary sauce recipe: a can of San Marzano tomatoes, a teaspoon of salt and two sprigs of basil, mixed with an immersion blender. This older photograph belongs alongside that recipe as a preparation moment; it does not show every step of this particular batch.

From my phone photo archive. A photo diary from my original phone photographs and their capture dates, with visual observations about the pizza.
